Recommended for: All employees to ensure compliance with current legislation. The act outlines the role of the employer, the supervisor, and the employee in the workplace. It places duties on these groups to ensure that the work site is made a safe and healthy place to work. The act gives the worker the right to refuse unsafe work, the right to know about hazards on the job and the right to representation on a Joint Health and Safety Committee.

Objective: The objective of WHMIS is to ensure the protection of Canadian workers from the adverse effects of hazardous materials through the provision of relevant information while minimizing the economic impact on industry and the disruption of trade.
